FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Athletics Department has named women's golfer
Mei Khuan Yong and men's golfer
Austin Schultz as recipients of the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month award for April.
Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communication Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.
Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) played every tournament during the 2015-2016 season with 28 rounds carded, producing the team's best finish in six events, including the final five events of the regular season. She also produced three top-10 finishes and three top-20 finishes this past season. Yong earned First Team All-Conference honors after placing among the league's top-10 at the 2016 A-Sun Conference Championship with a score of 227. She finished the year with a 75.29 stroke average, ranking fourth among all A-Sun golfers, and edged Briana Carlson's 2013-2014 mark of 75.69 as the program's best individual stroke average.
As a junior, the Malaysia native placed eighth among the league's golfers in the A-Sun Championship after leading the team with a scoring average of 77.04 after posting an average of 79 in her 20 competitive rounds during her sophomore year. As a freshman, Yong averaged only 0.43 double bogeys per round, which ranked in the top-100 in the country overall and in the top-five percent nationally.
In the classroom, Yong maintains a GPA of 3.99 as a professional golf management major which she will complete this summer. She is a seven-time President's List recipient for turning in a perfect 4.0 GPA, one-time Dean's List recipient, and an FGCU Athletics Academics Honors Luncheon Honoree for the past three years. Earlier this spring, Yong also picked up the conference's highest honor as the A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Schultz (Lakeland, Fla./Florida Southern College/Lee Virtual Instructional Program) competed in all nine tournaments during the 2016 season and led the team with a 74.19 scoring average. He finished in the top-25 in every tournament except one this past year. Of the 27 rounds he played, Schultz's score was used 26 times. He finished the year with 80 birdies, the 14th-most in single-season program history. Schultz was also the runner-up at the A-Sun Championship with a total score of 213.
After transferring to FGCU from Florida Southern College prior to his junior year, the Lakeland native played nine of 10 tournaments and posted a 75.92 stroke average to finish third on the team in that category. He completed his first year with FGCU with two eagles on the season, tying for the 14th most in single-season program history.
During his two years with the Green and Blue, Schultz maintained a GPA of 3.77 as a psychology major
. He is a one-time President's List recipient for the spring 2015 semester and a three-time member of the Dean's List for turning in a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the fall 2014, fall 2015, and spring 2016 semesters. Schultz is also a 2016 FGCU Athletics Academic Honors Luncheon Honoree as well as the first FGCU men's golfer to earn the prestigious honor of A-Sun's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, landing him on the All-Academic team for the first time this past season.
With the addition of Yong and Schultz, there are now six FGCU student-athletes that have been named the A-Sun's Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2015-2016 academic year.

In its 9th year as a Division-I member, FGCU has won a combined 53 conference regular season and tournament titles as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference and Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association. In just its 5th year of D-I postseason eligibility, FGCU has made 23 total NCAA Championship appearances, and seven programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sports. In 2014-15, FGCU finished 9th in the Division I-AAA Learfield Sports Director Cup final standings, ahead of several prominent Big East, Missouri Valley and Atlantic 10 Conference members.
