FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the Olympic Games only two weeks away, the FGCU Athletics Department will host an event to recognize and congratulate former volleyball standout
Brooke Youngquist Sweat and recently graduated swimmer
Lani Cabrera for qualifying for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The event will take place in the Alico Arena Hospitality Suite on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and will serve as the public's last chance to commemorate these distinguished athletes on their Olympic achievements.
Food and beverages will be served as Eagle fans will get the opportunity to meet and hear from Sweat and Cabrera on what it means to represent their respective countries at the Olympic Games.
Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla./Canterbury School), who was the first recruit in program history and still stands as the all-time leader in kills with 1,167, becomes FGCU's first U.S. Olympian as she and Lauren Fendrick are one of two American teams competing for gold.
Cabrera (Bridgetown, Barbados/St. Ursula's Secondary School), a three-time CCSA Conference Champion and program record holder in the 500 free, 1,000 free and 1,650 free, became the fourth member of the FGCU Swimming & Diving program to qualify for the Olympics as she will compete for her home country of Barbados next month. Cabrera will be joined by former teammate and rising senior
Evita Leter (Paramaribo, Suriname/Doral Academy) in Rio. Unfortunately, Leter will be unable to attend Saturday's send-off.
