FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Athletics Department has named volleyball player
Amanda Carroll and baseball player
Corey Fehribach as recipients of the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month award for August.
Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communication Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.
Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS), who returns to the Green and Blue as a key component in her sophomore season, put herself in elite company this summer as she emerged as one of only 36 players from across the country to be named to the USA Volleyball Collegiate National Team - Indianapolis. The Albuquerque native was one of just 57 freshman invited to participate in a tryout in Colorado Springs, Colo., last February and was one of seven freshman to make the Indianapolis roster. Now, six matches into the 2016 campaign, Carroll leads the ASUN and ranks tied for 39th in the NCAA in kills per set (4.21) while also ranking tied for third in the league in kills (80).
Also a standout in the classroom, Carroll registered a 3.7 GPA as a communications major with a concentration in communication studies and minor in sociology during her freshman year. Additionally, she was a member of the Dean's List for turning in a GPA of 3.5 or higher and appeared on the FGCU Athletic Director's Honor Roll during both the fall and spring semesters.
Following the 2015 season, Carroll was named the ASUN Freshman of the Year on the strength of compiling a Division I program record 415 kills to go along with 332 assists and 26 service aces. She collected a team-leading 14 double-doubles and was also named a member of the ASUN All-Conference Second Team and ASUN All-Freshman Team.
Fehribach (Douglasville, Ga./West Georgia CC/Alexander HS) returns as a senior leader on the FGCU baseball team after turning in an impressive summer in the Sunbelt Baseball League. As a member of the Carrollton Clippers, Fehribach helped lead his team to a 24-9 overall record, West Division Championship and appearance in the Sunbelt League Tournament Championship. The Douglasville, Ga., native not only led the league with 27 RBI – 10 more than any Clippers teammate – but also ranked first on the team in hits (31) and doubles (nine) and tied for the team lead with three home runs. Additionally, he ranked second in runs (21) to go along with his .295 average.
Like Carroll, Fehribach is a communications major with a concentration in communication studies and a minor in sociology. He turned in a 3.93 GPA during his first year at FGCU while making the Dean's List during the fall semester and the President's List with a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring. Additionally, he was named to the FGCU Athletic Director's Honor Roll both semesters.
In his first season with the Green and Blue, Fehribach turned in a .244 average and ranked tied for third on the team with two home runs and tied for fifth with nine doubles and 21 RBI. In the ASUN Tournament, he appeared and started in all five games and went 7-for-20 (.350) with three runs, one home run and four RBI. His ninth-inning home run against UNF not only propelled FGCU to a 3-2 win against the rival Ospreys, but also its first ASUN Championship Game in program history.
