FGCU Athletics Advances to Year #3 of Reclassification
FORT MYERS, Fla. – On Wednesday, July 13, the Division I Leadership Council approved for Florida Gulf Coast University to become active Division I multidivisional members in volleyball and baseball.
"This is an exciting and historic step for our Athletics program," said FGCU President Wilson Bradshaw. "Our teams are already making quite a name for FGCU Athletics within the Atlantic Sun Conference and beyond, and we look forward to this opportunity for our volleyball and baseball student-athletes, followed in the near future for our other sports' student-athletes."
“We are very pleased to have received official word on our continued successful advancement within the reclassification process” said FGCU Athletic Director Ken Kavanagh. “Most importantly, we anxiously anticipate the opportunities now available for our baseball and volleyball student-athletes to compete for post-season berths in the A-Sun and NCAA post-season tournaments. Our appreciation goes out to the leadership of President Bradshaw, Dr. Jo-Ann Nester, Carl McAloose and the too numerous to mention others that have worked so hard behind the scenes to have us to this stage. We now look forward to successfully completing the certification process and for all our FGCU student-athletes to have the same exciting opportunities as well come 2011-12.”
The Council also approved the following schools to become active Division I multidivisional members in the identified sports: • Central Arkansas (women’s soccer, baseball)
• Presbyterian (softball, men’s tennis)
• South Carolina Upstate (softball, men’s soccer)
• Western Kentucky (Football Championship Subdivision to Football Bowl Subdivision)
Division I has granted active membership status to Kennesaw State, New Jersey Institute of Technology, North Florida and Utah Valley, effective this fall.
The Division I Leadership Council approved the actions based on recommendations from the NCAA Division I Administrative Cabinet.
All of the schools were in the reclassification or provisional membership process before the Division I Board of Directors’ August 2007 decision to place a moratorium on new Division I members. That moratorium lasts through August 2011 but does not affect the progress of schools that had begun the process before August 2007.
