Chris Sale Named CBF Nat'l Pitcher of the Year Finalist
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Chris Sale has been named one of three finalists for the College Baseball Foundation National Pitcher of the Year Award. The Foundation, in conjunction with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America, will announce its winner July 2 in Lubbock, Texas, during the College Baseball Awards Show, which will be streamed on MLB.com. The event will follow the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony July 1 in Lubbock.
Sale, a junior from Lakeland,Fla., is joined as a finalist for the Pitcher of the Year award by Drew Pomeranz, a junior from the University of Mississippi, and junior Alex Wimmers, from Ohio State.
A quick look at the three finalists:
• Sale, a left-handed pitcher and No. 13 overall pick by the Chicago White Sox, produced amazing numbers in 2010, including finishing his junior season with an 11-0 record, two saves and a 2.01 ERA in 17 appearances. He racked up 146 strikeouts with just 14 walks for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 10.4-to-1 for the year. Opponents had a .218 batting average against him.
• Wimmers posted a 9-0 record this season - the most wins in an undefeated season for a Buckeye hurler - while leading the Big Ten (and ranking fifth nationally) in ERA (1.60) and opposing batting average (.218). He struck out 86 batters in 73.0 innings to climb into a tie for 16th-place all-time in the Big Ten Conference with his 273 strikeouts. He repeated as the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.
• Pomeranz, a left-handed pitcher from Collierville, Tenn., finished the season with a 9-2 record and a 2.24 earned run average in 100.2 innings pitched. He struck out 139 batters and walked 49 in 16 starts.
The College Baseball Foundation was established in 2004 and has inducted 57 greats into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock. The group promotes the highest ideals and recognition of greatness on college baseball diamonds in the 150 years since the first intercollegiate contest in 1859 between Amherst and Williams.
