Sale Promoted to Triple-A Charlotte
FORT MYERS, Fla. – It took just 11 days and four relief appearances, but former FGCU baseball star and Chicago White Sox first round pick Chris Sale’s current stay in Advanced Class-A Winston-Salem is over. Following Monday night’s 7-4 win over Lynchburg, Sale learned that he has been promoted to Triple-A Charlotte.
Sale made his fourth appearance for Winston-Salem on Monday, working the seventh inning. Sale gave up the first two runs of his pro career – just one earned – but recorded another strikeout and induced an inning-ending double play.
The 13th overall selection in the 2010 MLB First-Year Draft, Sale went four innings over four appearances for the Dash, giving up just one earned run and three hits while striking out four. Sale did retire nine batters in a row at one point.
Sale’s promotion came on the eve of the Gold Spikes Award (GSA) presentation which will be held on Tuesday at All-Star FanFest in Anaheim as part of a production by MLB and MLBAM.
Originally scheduled to be presented and shown live on GoldenSpikesAward.com and MLB.com, the 2010 GSA will be handed out at 2:30 P.M. ET. Video of the awards show won’t be available until 5 p.m. ET.
Joining Sale as finalists for the GSA are Chris Duffy, IF/OF, Central Florida; Yasmani Grandal, C, Miami (Fla.); Bryce Harper, C/IF/OF, Southern Nevada; and Drew Pomeranz, LHP, Mississippi.
Sale, Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Year, the Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year, a finalist for the College Baseball Foundation's Pitcher of the Year award, and a finalist for the 2010 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award (GSA), has been named an All-American by five different outlets (Ping!Baseball, Louisville Slugger, Yahoo! Sports, Baseball America, ABCA/Rawlings).
The 21-year-old produced amazing numbers in 2010 to help the Eagles clinch their third consecutive Atlantic Sun regular season title. Sale finished his junior season with an 11-0 record, two saves and a 2.01 ERA in 17 appearances. He also racked up 146 strikeouts with just 14 walks for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 10.4-to-1 for the year.
