Sale Featured In Most Recent Issue Of Sporting News
FORT MYERS, Fla. – With 14 major league relief appearances under his belt just three months after being drafted, former FGCU All-American pitcher and Chicago White Sox 2010 first round draft pick Chris Sale is featured in the most recent issue of Sporting News that hit newsstands on Monday.
On page 32 in an article written by Ryan Fagan, Sale was tabbed the Minor League Rookie of the Year for his quick ascent into big leagues and dominating performance thus far out of the pen for the White Sox. The cover of the issue features Hines Ward and James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
White Sox director of player development Buddy Bell had the following to say about Sale.
“From the beginning, Kenny (Williams, the Sox’s G.M.) is really the one who pushed this through. He felt along that Chris could help the major league club at some point this year. The thing about Chris is he’s a very mature kid. He has no fear at all. He’s competitive. He pitches in the mid-90s, and he’s throwing his breaking ball and changeup for strikes. That’s an usual combination for any young pitcher. The plan all along is to get him back into the rotation, but he’s been so successful out of the bullpen. That’s a good problem to have.”
Sale has made Bell, Williams and the rest of the White Sox organization feel good about using the 13th overall selection in this year’s MLB Draft to select the 6-foot-5 lefty. Sale sports a 1-1 record, two saves, a microscopic 0.57 ERA and 21 strikeouts since being called up to “the show” on Aug. 4. After last night’s scoreless inning against Kansas City, Sale has now made eight straight appearances and gone 9.1 innings without allowing an earned run. Opposing hitters have managed just eight hits over 15.2 innings against Sale, resulting in a .151 batting average.
It took Sale all of 11 days to earn his first promotion from Advanced Single-A Winston-Salem to Triple-A Charlotte on July 13. Just 22 days after joining the Knights, Sale made the big move to Chicago.
A five-time All-American (Ping!Baseball, Louisville Slugger, Yahoo! Sports, Baseball America, ABCA/Rawlings) and Collegiate Baseball’s Player of the Year in 2010, Sale ranked fourth in the nation as a junior in 2010 with 146 strikeouts over 103 innings. The Lakeland, Fla. product’s 11-0 record, two saves and 2.01 ERA helped the Eagles clinch their third consecutive A-Sun regular season title. Sale became the second player in program history to win the A-Sun Pitcher of the Year award and was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award.
