Spring Season Of The FGCU Sports Report Kicks Off Friday
Friday, January 14, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – With classes back in session and the winter athletic season halfway done, the FGCU Sports Report produced by WGCU-TV returns for its 18-episode spring season on Friday night at 8:30 p.m.

The first showing on Friday will go off at 8:30 p.m. on WGCU (Ch.3) followed by a 6:30 a.m. showing on ABC7 Saturday morning. A complete list of each week’s show is listed below.

The FGCU Sports Report, a 30-minute show which showcases all 14 Division I sports at FGCU, will keep the Southwest Florida community apprised of the FGCU Eagles’ action on a weekly basis through mid-May. As a community partnership agreement, Waterman Broadcasting also will be airing the show on ABC7 and NBC’s News Now channel.

This week’s show will tip-off with a feature on FGCU’s undefeated women’s basketball team, who is one of just two women’s programs in the nation with an unblemished record at 12-0 and 5-0 in the A-Sun Conference. Led by head coach Karl Smesko, the Eagles’ exciting brand of basketball that features 11.5 three-pointers per game – tops in the nation – has also yielded a 30-game home unbeaten streak that will be put on the line this weekend against Kennesaw State (Sat. – 7:05 p.m.) and Mercer (Mon. – 7:05 p.m.).

FGCU Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh sat down with host Tom James, who also serves as the Voice of FGCU Basketball, as the feature interview. In the five-minute interview, Kavanagh discusses the successful fall that the athletic department enjoyed, the hot start by the women’s basketball program and the on-going Football Feasibility Study.

Stemming from Kavanagh’s interview is a feature on the newly-introduced FGCU Athletics graduation sashes. The sashes were donned for the first time by three student-athletes in December’s graduation.

This week’s player profiles will focus on women’s diver Gaby Shaw (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista), who was named the CCSA Diver of the Week on Oct. 13. Shaw owns the CCSA’s top score this season on the one-meter board and the third-best in the three-meter. Men’s basketball freshman Chase Fieler (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) will be the other student-athlete profile. Fieler has started eight games this season, averaging 5.2 points and 3.4 rebounds.
