Eagle Math Adding Up To Big Results In Local Community
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Made possible thanks to the support of Bank of America, the FGCU Department of Athletics has taken its EAGLE MATH program to 34 different schools in Lee and Collier counties in Southwest Florida since the start of the new year.
With help from current FGCU student-athletes and coaches focusing on why math is both important and fun in life and in athletics, more than 3,400 second graders in 10 Collier County schools and 24 Lee County schools are participating in EAGLE MATH.
“Bank of America is pleased to build upon Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics’ commitment to youth, and we thank them for their partnership in their EAGLE MATH Program," said Gerri Moll, Market President for Lee and Collier County. "Teachable moments don’t always come within the confines of the classroom and this program is great evidence of the power of creative partnerships between business and educators to impact the future of these children.”
EAGLE MATH features a work book with 69 problems divided into two sections. The book is designed with story problems that feature FGCU student-athletes and coaches as word problem characters. The book was designed and created at FGCU.
As a reward for participating in the program, second graders and a companion adult receive a free ticket to attend FGCU’s men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader on Feb. 19 against Campbell University. The students who participated will be honored at halftime of women’s contest which tips at 7:30 p.m.
FGCU Athletics worked with the Superintendants Office at each school district to confirm the classrooms, coordinate with the second grade teachers and have the booklets delivered so the EAGLE MATH program is part of the math class plan at these schools.
“The children were so excited about meeting the athletes and they love the math books,” said Darlene Momberg, a second grade teacher at Lely Elementary. “I have two children who finished most of them this afternoon. Thank you for sharing your time, and kind words. I hope you have inspired the next generation of students for FGCU!”
