Cruz and Youngquist Earn Northwestern Mutual Academic Honor
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Athletics has named sophomore men's cross country runner Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee) and senior volleyball libero Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) as the second recipients of the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month award. Cruz and Youngquist are the Academic Student-Athletes of the Month for November.
Each month, the FGCU Sports Information Department and Athletic Academic staff will choose an Eagle as the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month. Factors in the selection for this honor will be a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.
Named one of three unanimous selections to the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team this season and being one of two men’s cross country runners to represent the Green and Blue for the first time at the Division I NCAA South Regional, Cruz has been the top finisher for the Eagles in four of the six competitions this season, including a first place finish at the season-opening FGCU Invitational. Placing 25th overall at the Atlantic Sun Conference championship, Cruz helped the Eagles to a pair of top three finishes this season, leading the squad to a first place finish at the season-opening FGCU Invite. Taking seventh overall in the field of 214 runners, Cruz picked up the program’s first-ever A-Sun Runner of the Week for his effort at the Disney World Cross Country Classic. The Immokalee, Fla. product owns a 3.59 cumulative GPA and also holds six of the program’s top 10 all-time 8K times, including the top three times on the list.
“Argeo is a great example of what hard work will get you,” said cross country head coach Cassandra Harbin. “This is certainly well-deserved recognition for Argeo, as he is what FGCU strives for in a student-athlete. He gets the job done in the classroom, as well as, in the competitive arena, and I am very proud of him for this honor.”
Youngquist, the 2011 A-Sun Preseason Libero of the Year and three-time A-Sun All-Academic honoree, earned a spot on the All-Conference second team. The Estero, Fla. product, who earned second team honors in 2010, led FGCU in digs (466; 4.16 per set), while ranking third in assists and fifth in service aces. Earning a 3.79 cumulative GPA in resort and hospitality management, the libero is the lone Eagle on the A-Sun’s first All-Academic team.
Youngquist, who finished her career in fourth place in the A-Sun Conference record books with 1,652 career digs, will graduate in the Spring of 2012 with a Bachelors degree in Resort and Hospitality Management.
“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the honor,” said volleyball head coach Dave Nichols. “Holly brings focus and maturity to everything that she does. Not only was she our best player all season long, but she is an even better person. Holly is a walking example of what a true student-athlete should be. Her commitment to excellence runs through the court, the classroom and all that she does in her life.
