FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Athletics has named senior women's basketball three-point specialist Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn./Moorhead HS) and sophomore men’s basketball guard Christophe Varidel (Versoix, Switzerland/Worcester Academy (Mass.)) as the recipients of the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month award for the month of December.

Each month, the FGCU Sports Information Department and Athletic Academic staff will choose an Eagle as the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month. Factors in the selection for this honor will be a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.

Kelsey Jacobson, arguably the nation’s best three-point shooter, currently has 1,160 career points (third all-time in FGCU history) and sits alone as the A-Sun’s all-time leader in career three-pointers with 307 career triples. This season Jacobson, who holds the Atlantic Sun record for three-pointers in a season (96), is the Green and Blue’s third leading scorer (11.4). The Biology major ranks first in the A-Sun and sixth in the nation at 3.2 treys per game and has made multi-threes in 13 of 18 games this season. The Barnesville, Minn. product, who owns a 3.46 cumulative GPA, has made a three in 81 of her last 84 contests and 103 of 110 for her career and, with at least 11 games remaining in her collegiate career, is on pace to finish with 338 career three-pointers made, which would rank her top 15 in NCAA Division I history.

“Kelsey is an outstanding student,” said women’ s basketball head coach Karl Smesko. “What impresses me most about Kelsey is how enthusiastic she is about learning. She is someone who looks forward to class because she knows she is going to learn something. It is great to see a student so engaged in her education.”

One of the premiere shooters in the A-Sun, Varidel ranks second in the conference in three-point percentage (.456) while ranking third on the team with 10.1 points per game. Varidel has reached double figures seven times on the season, leading the squad with a pair of 20-point outings. The Versoix, Switzerland product knocked down the 100th three-pointer of his young career earlier this season at Nebraska. Earning a 3.38 cumulative GPA, the guard is currently the A-Sun leader in free throw percentage (.897).

“Christophe’s success academically and on the basketball court is a direct result of his special work ethic,” said men’ s basketball head coach Andy Enfield. “He is relentless in trying to become a great student-athlete by working so hard for so many hours each day/week.”
