Butler and Svensson Earn Northwestern Mutual Academic Honor
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Athletics has named junior diver Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) and freshman swimmer Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) as the recipients of the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month award for the month of February.
Each month, the FGCU Sports Information Department and Athletic Academic staff will choose an Eagle as the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month. Factors in the selection for this honor will be a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.
Butler earned a pair of CCSA Diver of the Week awards during the month of January. Competing in her first meet with the Eagles (Jan. 9), she placed first in the 3-meter dive against Radford with a score of 270.90, which qualifies her for NCAA Diving Zone B. Butler also scored a 256.28 in the 1-meter dive against the Highlanders. The Orangeburg, N.Y. native earned two sixth-place finishes overall in the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive against Georgia Tech, Liberty and North Dakota with scores of 213.80 and 213.75, respectively.
Butler earned her second Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) award of the season after helping FGCU defeat FIU (Jan. 28), 198-99, last weekend to improve to 11-2. She picked up second-place finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events last weekend in FGCU’s meet against FIU. The junior also earned an NCAA Diving Zone “B” qualification in the 1-meter event with a score of 281.17.
Svensson also had a solid month for the Eagles, most notably her performances on Jan. 7 that helped her earn CCSA Swimmer of the Week honors. She earned two individual victories in the 50 free (23.17) and the 100 back (56.79), finishing first against Georgia Tech, Liberty and North Dakota. In the 200-yard medley relay, she swam the first leg in 25.77, helping the Eagles place first over Georgia Tech with a time of 1:45.37.
