Anthi Chatzigiakoumi Helps Lead U-20 Greek National Team to European Championship
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Anthi Chatzigiakoumi (Athens, Greece/General Sr. HS of Kallithea), a sophomore forward on the FGCU women's basketball team, played a key role in helping the U-20 Greek National Team lay claim to the 2012 European Championship in Klatovy, Czech Republic. Greece clinched the Division B title with a 76-71 victory over hosts Czech Republic on Sunday, Aug. 26.
“We are all really proud of Anthi,” said FGCU women’s basketball head coach Karl Smesko. “She played very well and did a great job representing her country, as well as FGCU. We are expecting big things from Anthi this year.”
Greece was the top overall finisher in the tournament, while Germany and Hungary finished second and third, respectively. All three teams earned promotion to Division A for next year's tournament.
Against Czech Republic on Sunday, Chatzigiakoumi finished with four points on 2-of-3 shooting in a foul-plagued 16 minutes.
Chatzigiakoumi, who has played in seven European Championships for Greece, continued to gain valuable playing experience, and she made the most of her time on the floor. She averaged 31.6 minutes per game in the eight games of the European Championships, while scoring a total of 58 points and averaging 7.3 points per game. She also grabbed 43 rebounds (5.4 rebounds per game), including 35 defensive boards, to go with 15 assists (1.9 assists per game) and five steals (0.6 steals per game).
Chatzigiakoumi ranked in the top 20 among all players eight categories, including three-point field goals made (6th; 1.3), minutes (7th; 31.6), three-point field goal percentage (7th; 33.3%), blocks (7th; 0.6), double-doubles (8th; 1), defensive rebounds (9th; 4.4), total rebounds (12th; 5.4) and assists (17th; 1.9 apg)
The Athens, Greece native will return to Fort Myers this week to rejoin her FGCU teammates and begin her sophomore year of school.
