Suchy and Chatzigiakoumi Earn Northwestern Mutual Academic Honor

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Athletics has named sophomore baseball outfielder Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) and sophomore women’s basketball forward Anthi Chatzigiakoumi (Athens, Greece/General Sr. HS of Kallithea) as recipients of the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month award. Suchy and Chatzigiakoumi are the Academic Student-Athletes of the Month for September.

Each month, the FGCU Sports Information Department and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month. Factors in the selection for this honor will be a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.

Playing in 66 of 69 contests with the Willmar Stingers this summer, Suchy ranked among the Northwoods League’s best in multiple categories. The elementary education major hit .349, which was the eighth best average in the league, with 62 RBI and 57 runs scored, to rank second and sixth overall, respectively. Suchy, who landed as high as No. 4 in the Northwoods League’s top prospects according to Baseball America, connected for 22 extra-base hits, including eight home runs, and also ranked in the top 15 in the league with 37 walks. Heading to FGCU for his second season with the Green and Blue, Suchy, who owns a 3.48 cumulative GPA, swiped 17 bases and was only caught stealing three times.

Chatzigiakoumi played a key role in helping the U-20 Greek National Team lay claim to the 2012 European Championship in Klatovy, Czech Republic. Greece clinched the Division B title with a 76-71 victory over the Czech Republic on Sunday, Aug. 26. The elementary education major, who has played in seven European Championships for Greece, continued to gain valuable playing experience, and she made the most of her time on the floor. She averaged 31.6 minutes per game in the eight games of the European Championships, while scoring a total of 58 points and averaging 7.3 points per game. She also grabbed 43 rebounds (5.4 rebounds per game), including 35 defensive boards, to go with 15 assists (1.9 assists per game) and five steals (0.6 steals per game).

Earning a 3.3 cumulative GPA, the forward ranked in the top 20 among all players eight categories, including three-point field goals made (6th; 1.3), minutes (7th; 31.6), three-point field goal percentage (7th; 33.3%), blocks (7th; 0.6), double-doubles (8th; 1), defensive rebounds (9th; 4.4), total rebounds (12th; 5.4) and assists (17th; 1.9 apg).
