Volleyball Set to Battle USF in Non-Conference Action

FORT MYERS, Fla. - After a 10-day break since their last match, the FGCU volleyball squad will head to Tampa, Fla. to take on in-state rival USF on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The Eagles enter the matchup with a 4-6 overall record, while the Bulls are 7-5 overall on the season.

FGCU has six players that have registered between 25 and 70 kills so far this season, led by junior Christine Pinder’s (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS/Houston/Central Florida CC) team-leading 68. Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) leads the team with 106 digs (3.12/set). The setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) has run the FGCU offense, averaging 4.94 assists and 3.52 assists per set, respectively.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. USF
The Bulls and Eagles have only met four times prior to Tuesday night’s match. FGCU leads the all-time series 3-1, including wins in 2007, 2010 and 2011. The Green and Blue swept the Bulls 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-19) in the last meeting between the two teams on Oct. 12, 2011. FGCU also swept USF 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-18) in the last meeting in Tampa on Nov. 11, 2010.

SCOUTING THE BULLS
The Bulls, winners of six of their last eight matches, are coming off a three-match sweep at their second home tournament of the season and ended the weekend with a three-set victory over FIU on Sunday, Sept. 16.

USF, who is 4-2 in home matches this season, ranks 56th nationally with 16.31 digs per set. Defensive specialist Claudia Cabrera has anchored the team’s defensive unit, averaging 4.66 digs per set, to rank her 86th nationally. Caitlyn Breen currently ranks second among BIG EAST players with 1.17 blocks per set. The senior posted nine blocks against FIU and made the all-tournament team last weekend after totaling 14 rejections in three matches.
