Men's Tennis Sweeps Main Draw Titles on Final Day of FGCU Fall Invite

FORT MYERS, Fla. – One title in the morning and another in the afternoon. That was how the final day of the FGCU Fall Invitational went for the FGCU men’s tennis team as junior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./ Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) and sophomore Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS (FL)) combined to win the Doubles Main Draw championship, while sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) cruised to the Singles Main Draw title.

Both titles were won with no dramatics, starting with Bao and Lvovsky’s 8-5 win in the doubles championship against Barry’s combo of Leo Vivas and Eduardo Alfonzo. Vives capped his 5-0 run to the singles title with a straight-set 6-1, 6-1, triumph over Victor Mauz of Miami.

“I can’t describe how good it feels to sweep the singles and doubles titles at our host tournament,” said second-year head coach C.J. Weber. “This was a great field of teams and it’s a testament to the guys’ grit to be able to take home both championships. Now we need to continue to build on this because the best is yet to come for this program!”

After a come-from-behind win in the first round against UCF, Bao and Lvovsky posted a pair of 8-5 wins against an FAU tandem and another UCF doubles squad to advance to Sunday’s championship match. The win over the top-seeded FAU squad in the quarterfinals came against Taylor Albrecht and Will Neuner, who finished last season ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region.

“I’m happy we were able to keep both crowns at home,” said Bao, the reigning Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year. “As a team, we played great tennis this weekend and we showed the resilience that coach tells us about every day in practice. I’m very proud of our team and can’t wait to continue to show everyone what FGCU men’s tennis can do.”

Sunday was a busier day for Vives, who entered the morning semifinal match having surrendered just 12 games in his first three matches. Vives was even more impressive Sunday, taking care of Barry’s Renato Lombardi in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2, before waiting out a weather delay to defeat Mauz. All five of Vives’ victories en route to the singles championship came in straight sets and he gave up just 18 games over the weekend. Vives’ season record stands at 8-2 with all eight wins coming in straight sets.

“It was a very successful weekend for our team and I know from my standpoint that I appreciate what my coach and teammates have done for me to make a successful transition to FGCU,” said Vives, who transferred to FGCU from National Champion USC this offseason. “I really enjoyed playing these matches in front of our home crowd and want to thank everyone that came out to support us this weekend.”

After a hectic start to its fall campaign FGCU will have a few weeks off before its back in action at the ITA Southeast Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla. The ITA Southeast Regionals will run from Oct. 18-22. Fans can get updates on FGCU men’s tennis on twitter by following @FGCUMensTennis.
