FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team won its seventh consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference match on Saturday afternoon, earning a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) decision over Stetson at the Edmunds Center and giving head coach Dave Nichols his 350th career victory. The Eagles, who have swept six of their last seven opponents and won 16 consecutive sets in conference play, are off to the best A-Sun start in program history (7-0). FGCU last started conference play 6-0 in 2008.

“We had a nice efficient performance today,” said Nichols. “We played really well and were able to just go in and take care of business.”

The Green and Blue, owning an 8-1 all-time record against the Hatters, improved to 11-7 overall (7-0 A-Sun) with the win, while SU fell to 3-20 overall (0-7 A-Sun). The win also gave Nichols win No. 350 of his 17-year career as a head coach. He is now 350-160 all-time, including 74-60 at FGCU.

“I actually had no clue that this was my 350th win until after the match,” Nichols said with a smile. “It’s pretty cool to accomplish that milestone though.

Junior Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) led the Eagles with 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Junior Christine Pinder (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS/Houston/Central Florida CC) nearly recorded a double-double with nine kills and nine digs. Sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) chipped win with seven kills and a pair of blocks, while libero Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) tallied a team-high 10 digs. The setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) racked up 30 assists and 15 digs combined.
FGCU hit .240 as a team, while holding the Hatters to a .092 hitting percentage in the sweep. The Eagles stumbled out of the gate with a .059 hitting percentage in the first set, but followed that performance with .308 and .391 in sets two and three, respectively.

FGCU will be back in action Tuesday night (Oct. 9) when they welcome Bethune-Cookman (2-18, 2-1 MEAC) to Alico Arena for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
