Botha, Sterkel Advance in Doubles Draw at USTA/ITA Southeast Regional

TAMPA, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis duo of junior Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) and freshman Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) advanced out of the first round of the doubles main draw on the opening day of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional held as USF with a win over North Florida.

Doubles action kicked-off the first day, as Botha and Sterkel earned a hard-fought 8-6 win over Hollander and Conningham of UNF to advance into the Round of 16. The duo will be back in action on Saturday at 9 a.m. against Florida’s Collins and Janowicz, who earned an 8-3 victory against Georgia Tech. With a win, they would play again immediately following the match.

Sterkel returned the court for singles action after her win with Botha and fell in dramatic three-set fashion against FIU’s Boha, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Sterkel along with three other Eagles who dropped singles main draw first round matches will now play in the field of 32 singles backdraw that will also begin on Saturday morning.
