GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team falls to Florida, 2-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at James G. Pressly Stadium.
The Green and Blue finish the season with a 14-4-3 after capturing their third-straight regular season title and second-straight tournament title. Florida improves to 18-4-1 on the year and will face the winner of the UCF/Miami match up in the second round.
“We gave ourselves a fighting chance. Defensively, Brittany Brown kept us in the game. We had some chances and we couldn’t capitalize,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “Hats off to our girls, we had a lot of young players on the team and no one expected us to do anything this year.”
The loss ends a six game unbeaten streak and a five-game shutout streak for the Eagles.
Freshman keeper Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) made a career-high nine saves in the loss. Brown finishes with a 13-3-3 record and nine shutouts in her first season with the Eagles.
Florida managed to get off 19 shot in the game, including 12 in the second half.
The Gators broke through in the 22nd minute when Erika Tymrak received a pass from Adriana Leon on the right side and beat Brown in the top right corner to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles were able to hold off the Gators until the 77th minute when Annie Speese scored from 6 yards out to take a 2-0 lead late in the game.
Florida kept control of the ball for much of the game and didn’t allow the Eagles a chance to take a shot on goal the entire game.
