FORT MYERS, Fla. – Seven Eagles scored in double figures, led by freshman Katie Meador (Salem, Ill./Salem Community HS) 11 point, 12 rebound performance, as the FGCU women's basketball team drained 12 three-pointers in a 100-31 rout of Warner on Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena.
The Eagles (1-0), who led the nation in three-point field goals per game (10.7) last season, knocked down 12-of-31 shots from long distance on the afternoon. Six different players made at least one trey for the Green and Blue, led by redshirt senior Lerrin Cook’s (Kearny, Ariz./Ray HS/Yavapai College) 4-of-11 night.
Cook finished with 12 points in 17 minutes. Redshirt junior Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS) registered a game-high 13 points to go with eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. Reigning A-Sun Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Brittany Kennedy (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS/Oregon State) filled the stat sheet, recording 11 points, nine assists, six steals and five rebounds. Meador picked up her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Rookie Taylor Gradinjean (Cudahy, Wisc./Cudahy HS) tallied 12 points and six boards in 14 minutes, while redshirt senior Betsy Adams (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes HS/Valpo) and freshman Jaime Gluesing (Solon, Ohio/Solon HS) each chipped in with 11 points.
The Eagles opened the game with a 23-0 run, holding the Royals (0-1) scoreless until Brooke Garmon made a layup at the 12:26 mark of the first half. Following the Warner bucket, the Green and Blue used a 32-10 run to close the half and take a 55-12 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
In the second half, FGCU used a 24-0 run over the first 10 minutes of the second period to take a 79-12 lead. Trenecia Henderson scored a layup (79-14) to stop the Eagle run, but FGCU went on to outscore the Royals 21-17 over the final 10:41 of the game to pick up the 100-31 win. The Green and Blue’s 100 points mark the 11th time in program history and the second time in the last two seasons that FGCU has hit the century mark.
Warner was limited to just 12-of-56 (21.4 percent) from the field and 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from behind the arc in the game.
FGCU hit 36-of-75 (48 percent) from the floor on the night, including 12-of-31 (38.7 percent) from long distance.
The Eagles return to the court Wednesday, Nov. 14 for a matchup with in-state foe FIU. Gametime is set for 7:05 p.m.
