Softball Adds Three Student-Athletes During Early Signing Period
FORT MYERS, Fla. – This past week, the FGCU softball team signed three student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) during the early signing period. The Eagles added Tori Van Camp, Jeanie Verderese and Taylor Wade.
"We are very excited that these three young ladies have decided to join our team next fall,” said head coach David Deiros. “All three are fantastic students and will be very successful in the classroom at FGCU. All three are athletic and versatile--they can each play different roles for us on offense and defense. Most importantly, Tori, Jeanie, and Taylor exhibit impeccable character and integrity. I expect all three will be fantastic teammates from the get go and will develop into strong leaders for our next group of Eagles."
Tori Van Camp is a third basemen from Zellwood, Fla. and attended Apopka High School. She earned a place on the Metro Conference First Team in 2012 by hitting .450 with 32 RBI and a .775 slugging percentage. Van Camp holds the single-season record for batting average at Apopka where she was a Leadership Award Winner (2011) and a Gold Glove honoree (2012). She also plays for the Windermere Wildfire travel ball club.
"Tori is athletic and intelligent on the field,” said Deiros. “She has a strong arm and a keen awareness of her defensive responsibilities. On offense, she has tremendous power to all fields and is a super baserunner with great instincts."
Jeanie Verderese is a shortstop from Creekside High School in Jacksonville, Fla. She was named to the All-St. Johns County Team in 2012 after batting .401 with 16 doubles, 19 RBI and 41 stolen bases. Verderese was named the “In the Zone” Student-Athlete of the Year, and American Youth Character Award winner. During the summer, she plays for the Jacksonville Players Elite travel ball team.
"Jeanie brings tremendous versatility and energy to our team,” said Deiros. “She has very good range and athleticism on defense--I believe she can play just about any position on the field. She is a saavy baserunner and is able to hit for both average and power."
Taylor Wade is a pitcher from Pace High School out of Pace, Fla. She earned 6A District 1 First Team honors in 2012 after compiling an 11-10 record with a 1.77 ERA, 177 strikeouts and 25 walks in 138 innings pitched. At the plate, Wade hit .324 with 14 RBI in 2012. Wade also plays for the West Florida Elite travel ball team.
"Taylor is a very talented pitcher” said Deiros. “Even though she has been hampered by injury over the last year, she continued to play through the pain and display a solid array of pitches and mechanics. She is very agile in the circle and will be an excellent defender for us. To top it off, she is very strong and can swing the bat effectively."
The softball team will open up the 2013 season when it travels to Miami, Fla. to play a double-header against FIU on February 13.
