Off to its best start in its six seasons in the Atlantic Sun, second place FGCU (11-6, 3-1) will begin its second road trip in league play at first place USC Upstate (8-7, 2-0) on Thursday night in a game that can be seen live on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app. Thursday is a rematch of last year’s A-Sun Tournament quarterfinal showdown in which sixth-seeded FGCU upset the third-seeded Spartans, 71-61, in the first season of Division I postseason eligibility for both programs. The Eagles have won five of their last seven games with their only A-Sun loss coming in overtime at Mercer, while the Spartans enter on a four-game win streak.

Since both teams entered the Atlantic Sun in 2007-08, FGCU holds a 6-4 edge in the all-time series against USC Upstate. Last season, the Spartans swept the regular season series en route to a 13-5 A-Sun record, but the Eagles were able to get revenge in the postseason with a 10-point win in the quarterfinals that kick-started their run to the championship game. FGCU is 2-2 all-time in Spartanburg.

FGCU was predicted as the No. 13 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament by ESPN.com’s Joe Lunardi in his Dec. 11th Bracketology. Lunardi has FGCU squaring off against No. 4 seed Gonzaga in San Jose, Calif. On Dec. 27, the Eagles were also predicted to represent the A-Sun in Jerry Palm of CBS Sports in his Bracketology. Palm has FGCU as the No. 15 seed in the East Region.

Out of the 13 Division I schools in the state of Florida, the Eagles (11-6) lead the state in victories, sitting one win ahead of No. 11/9 Florida (10-2), Miami (10-3) and UCF (10-4). Both the Gators and UCF are in action on Wednesday night.

Senior SHERWOOD BROWN and sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON give FGCU one of the top backcourts in the Atlantic Sun and the fourth-best scoring tandem in the conference. The duo is averaging a combined 28.4 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.4 steals per game.
• One of three combos in the A-Sun to both rank in the top 10 in scoring ... Thompson is eighth at 14.4 points per game while Brown is ninth at an even 14.0 points per night.
• Both reached the 20-point plateau at Samford, combining for 43 points, including 26 in the second half.

Sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON registered 57 steals as a freshman in 2011-12 - good for third in the A-Sun and fifth-best in program single-season history - and is on pace to shatter that total and the program record this season.

• Had a career-high of five steals at No. 9 Duke, vs. Toledo and vs. Loyola-MD.

The second-highest scoring tandem in the A-Sun, senior Sherwood Brown and sophomore Bernard Thompson take their game up to another level on the road.
• Account for 48 percent (271 of 566) of the team’s scoring on the road, leading the team in points in six of eight contests.
• Both players have reached double figures in all seven road games, while five of their six combined 20-point games are on the road.

Senior SHERWOOD BROWN became the second straight Eagle to win the A-Sun Player of the Week on Nov. 27. Brown’s A-Sun Player of the Week honor followed sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON’S on Nov. 20. Brown has also been the College Sports Madness’ A-Sun Player of the Week two times, while junior CHASE FIELER garnered the award from the media outlet on Dec. 17.

A CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-American a year ago, sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON has a quartet of 20-point games on the road this season and was named the A-Sun Player of the Week on November 20.

Redshirt sophomore ERIC MCKNIGHT sat out the 2011-12 after transferring to FGCU from Iowa State and is off to a strong start in the Green and Blue.
