FGCU Cruises Past FAU, 146-92, for Sixth-Straight Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Swimming and Diving team used 11 first-place finishes to cruise past FAU, 146-92, at the FGCU Aquatics Center Wednesday night. Sophomore Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) and senior Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS/Florida) led the charge with two individual victories apiece.

“The team stepped up and swam well tonight,” said three-time CCSA Coach of the Year Neal Studd. “We had some solid swims across the board so I am very happy.”

Svensson took first in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 23.33 and 51.28, respectively. Svensson also set a new pool record for the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 25.69 in her leg of the 200-medley relay.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Lehtonen and freshman Jennifer Morgan (Edmonton, Alberta/Harry Ainlay) placed first and second with times of 1:53.98 and 1:54.69, respectively. Lehtonen also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.48. Morgan added her own first-place finish by winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.80.

FGCU started off well in the first event with first and second-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of sophomore Maggie Holling (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I Leonard), freshman Meghan McGuirk (Plaistown, N.H./Peddie School), sophomore Heather Coutts (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Keeny/Houston) and freshman Sara Hamilton (Stonehaven, Scotland/Mackie Academy) finished in first with a time of 1:50.18.  The team of sophomore Karen Vilorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Elvel School), senior Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School), junior McKenzie Cassidy (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Bishop Verot) and senior Jamie Akenberger (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS/BGSU) finished second with a time of 1:54.18.

The Eagles kept the torrid pace with junior Lindsey Meeder (Boynton Beach, Fla./Park Vista) winning the 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 10:27.11. Junior Jessie Porter (Chorleywood, Hertforshire, United Kingdom/ Royal Masonic) finished right behind Meeder in second place with a time of 10:37.60.

Freshman Julie Leth-Espensen (Vanloese, Copenhagen, Denmark/Falkonergaardens Gymnasium) won the 200-yard IM event with a time of 2:05.34 and senior Danielle Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia/Bolles School) won her only individual event of the night when she won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.45.

In the final event of the night, the team of junior Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson), Lehtonen, Morgan and Hamilton won the 200-yard freestyle relay event with a time of 1:38.04

In diving, senior Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) collected a first-place finish on the three-meter board with a score of 262.35. On the one-meter, Butler finished third with a score of 229.80.

The Eagles will return back to the FGCU Aquatics Center Saturday, February 2, when they host their final home meet of the season against CCSA opponent North Florida. The dual meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
