FORT MYERS, Fla. – The reigning A-Sun Champion FGCU softball team will head east across Alligator Alley to face-off against FIU in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 13 to open its 2013 season at 6 p.m.

FGCU is coming off a 2012 campaign that ranks as one of the best in program history after winning Atlantic Sun regular season and tournament championships in its first year of postseason eligibility. The Eagles were selected to the Gainesville Regional site in their first Division I NCAA Tournament appearance to face No. 5 Florida in the tournament opener with FGCU defeating the Gators, 2-1, to give the Green and Blue its first-ever Division I NCAA Tournament victory.

FIU (1-4) began its 2013 schedule on Feb. 8 it hosted the Panther Invitational through Feb. 10 and finished the weekend on a three-game losing streak after picking up a split in day one of the event with a win over Georgetown. Panther junior Mariah Dawson is expected to get the start in the pitching circle when they square off against the Eagles with Dawson having compiled a 1.50 ERA in three starts, but failed to get a victory as she finished 0-2 during the weekend.

The doubleheader will serve as meetings 11 and 12 between FGCU and FIU with the Golden Panthers leading the all-time series 7-3 between the two teams. The two teams last met on March 30, 2011 at the FGCU Softball Complex with FIU sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 4-2.

Sophomore pitching stud Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) is expected to get the start for FGCU after being named the A-Sun Pitcher of the Year while recording 23 wins and a 1.55 ERA in 203.1 innings pitched in 2012. Morgan has collected numerous preseason accolades heading into 2013, including A-Sun Preseason Pitcher of the Year and A-Sun Preseason All-Conference first team honors, along with being named College Sports Madness A-Sun Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

The Green and Blue have a quick turnaround as they will head back to Fort Myers for their home opener on Friday, Feb. 15 with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch against Wichita State. The contest will be followed by the sold out matchup between FGCU and 2012 National Champion Alabama. Both games are part of the LaQuinta Inn at the Airport Tournament that will be held at the FGCU Softball Complex from Friday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 17.
