FORT MYERS, Fla. – Playing its third match in four days, the FGCU women’s tennis team (8-3, 2-0 A-Sun) shutout Wisconsin Green Bay, 7-0, at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon.

“Today leaves us with a great feeling going into more conference matches next week,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “I am really proud of Zhoe Solaun for coming in at the sixth spot and taking care of business. Next week on the road will really show us where we are at.”

The match against the Phoenix was the last of a six-match home stand for the Eagles, with FGCU finishing 5-1 over the stretch on their home courts.

Just as they did the day before against Northern Kentucky, the Green and Blue swept the three doubles matches in convincing and timely fashion, but this time against an out of conference opponent in the Phoenix.

Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) were once again solid in the third doubles spot as they won 8-0. The second Eagle doubles team of Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and Johanna Sterkel (Schwtzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) won 8-2 to clinch the doubles point and put FGCU up 1-0 in the dual match. To complete the three match sweep on the doubles court, Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) and Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) played close in the number one spot, but won 8-6 after pulling away from the opposition.

Elizabeth Means, Johanna Sterkel, Sarah Means, Gyanna Mandic and Morgan Bechtel each won their respective singles matches, all of which in straight sets, to catapult FGCU ahead of the Phoenix and clinch the dual match victory.

Sophomore Zhoe Solaun (Gainesville, Fla./F.W. Buchholz HS) filled in at the sixth singles spot for the Green and Blue and helped bring home the 7-0 sweep with her 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory that rounded out a successful day for the entire FGCU lineup.

FGCU will hit the road to continue its conference schedule against Mercer on Friday, March 22 as the Green and Blue will look to remain unbeaten in A-Sun play.

Following the match, results and a recap from the dual match action will be available at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com.
