Looking to Remain Perfect in A-Sun Play, Women’s Tennis Hits the Road
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After having played its last six matches at the FGCU Tennis Complex and compiling a 5-1 record during the span, the FGCU women’s tennis team (8-3, 2-0 A-Sun) will head north to face Mercer and Kennesaw State as the Eagles will look to stay unbeaten in conference play.
The Green and Blue will face Mercer on Friday, March 22 and Kennesaw State on Saturday March 23, with both matches set to begin at 10 a.m. on their respective days. As the Eagles look to improve to 4-0 in A-Sun play, the Bears and Owls will both be looking for their first league wins of the spring after both having dropped their first A-Sun matches.
With a 2-1 record on the road so far this season, FGCU will look to continue winning on the home courts of their opponents and playing spoiler as the Eagles will play their first matches outside the state of Florida this weekend.
Mercer (4-8, 0-1 A-Sun) will play host to FGCU with the Eagles holding a 4-1 all-time advantage over the Bears in five meetings between the two sides since FGCU joined the A-Sun during the 2007-08 season. The Bears won the last meeting between the two teams on March 15 during the 2012 season as they swept the Eagles 7-0 to end a four-match win streak that FGCU held over Mercer.
The Owls of Kennesaw State (5-7, 0-1 A-Sun) will look to tie up the all-time series with the Eagles in the sixth meeting between the two sides. FGCU leads the series 3-2 through the first five meetings with the Eagles having won 4-3 in 2012 when the two squads faced off on March 1 in a match that the Green and Blue prevailed. FGCU jumped on the Owls early on by winning the doubles point and three of the first four singles matches to clinch the dual match victory.
The Eagles will look to keep rolling over opponents on the doubles courts just as they have done in the last three matches after having struggled to secure the opening point through the first few weeks of the 2013 dual match season.
On the singles courts, FGCU has been dominant as of late in the three through six spots as they have posted a combined 21-3 record in those spots in the lineups in the last six dual matches. FGCU has not lost in the number six singles position since Feb. 21 against UCF, with the Eagles having posted a 9-2 cumulative record in that spot through 11 matches in the 2013 spring dual match season.
