Svensson Wins Elite 89th Award for NCAA Division I Women’s Championship

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) of the FGCU women’s swimming and diving team, is the is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championship.

Svensson, majoring in Economics, currently carries a 4.00 GPA. The Upsala, Sweden native, was presented with the award during the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

Svensson had a memorable season, garnering Most Outstanding Female Performer of the Meet at the 2013 CCSA Championship, winning the 50-free, 100-free and 100-back events.  Her times in the 50-free and 100-free qualified for NCAA “B” cuts.  She was a member of the 200-medley relay that set a meet and Conference record and qualified for NCAA “B” cuts, and anchored the 400-medley relay that finished first.

She set multiple records in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, and was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay that also set program records.
