Sunday Dual Match at UNF on the Slate for Women’s Tennis
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After completing its 2013 spring home schedule, the FGCU women’s tennis team (10-5, 4-2 A-Sun) will travel north to take on in-state foe North Florida on Sunday, April 7 at 10 a.m. in Jacksonville.
Both teams will be looking to capture its 11th win of the season as UNF sits at 10-4 overall and 3-1 in A-Sun league play. The Ospreys may collect win number 11 on Saturday, April 6 when they take on Stetson before facing FGCU on Sunday, April 7. Currently in a two match losing streak, FGCU will look to get back on track to end its longest losing skid of the 2013 dual match season.
A combination of the Ospreys having posted an 8-2 record on their home court so far this season and the Eagles having put together a 4-1 mark will increase the intensity of the matchup as both teams look to cement themselves among the top of the A-Sun standings with the conference tournament set to begin on April 19.
The Eagles and Ospreys have met four times with UNF having won all four of the dual matches between the two programs. The two squads last met on March 29, 2012 at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers with UNF having swept FGCU 7-0 on its way to the dual match win.
To be successful against UNF, the Green and Blue will have to get ahead early in the dual match and that can be achieved if FGCU can win the doubles point and start the match with a 1-0 advantage. The No. 3 doubles pair of Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) has posted an 8-3 overall record and a 5-1 A-Sun record when playing together. The Eagles will look for them to take their match in an effort to securing the doubles point on the road.
FGCU and UNF crossed paths earlier this spring when the two teams participated in the FGCU Spring Invitational that ran from Jan. 19-21 at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The two programs did not directly compete as the event was in an invitational format, but some of the singles and doubles players for FGCU took on those of UNF, giving both teams an early gauge heading into the spring dual match season.
