FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team will be looking for the regular season sweep of in-state foe No. 19 Florida on Tuesday evening, as the two teams are set to faceoff at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla. beginning at 6:30 p.m.
It will mark the fifth-straight year the Eagles have hosted a contest at Hammond Stadium, home of the Minnesota Twins spring training and Fort Myers Miracle minor league team. It’s the second time the Green and Blue have faced UF in the event, as the Gators got the better of the Eagles, 12-3, in the inaugural contest (April 21) during the 2009 campaign.
Fans can purchase tickets to the game at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com/tickets or by calling 239-590-7145. Tickets can also be obtained at the FGCU Ticket office located at the entrance to Alico Arena or at Hammond Stadium on the day of the game. A ticket to the contest also provides admission to the Fort Myers Miracle game prior to the collegiate contest.
The Eagles enter the contest with a 20-12 overall record, looking to halt a four-game skid. The Green and Blue dropped last week’s Tuesday meeting with FAU, 9-0, at Swanson Stadium before dropping the three-games with Atlantic Sun Conference co-favorite Mercer (L 7-6, L 4-3 (10 inn.), L 7-3) in Macon, Ga.
Earlier this season, FGCU swept then-No. 13 Florida (Feb. 22-24) over the three-game set (W 8-2, W 8-3, W 7-4) in Gainesville, Fla. The Eagles clinched the first three-game sweep of the Gators on their home turf since Miami (Feb. 28-Mar. 1) did so during the 2009 campaign. In the all-time series between the two schools, the Gators hold a 6-4 lead over the Eagles.
Offensively, the Eagles are led by junior utility man Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS), hitting .353 with team-highs of 30 RBI, 31 runs scored, 15 extra-base hits and four stolen bases. The Stuart, Fla. product holds a .496 slugging and .397 on-base percentage with one home run and three triples this season.
Senior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) has a .339 average with 21 runs scored and 14 RBI, leading the team with a .421 on-base percentage. Redshirt senior Brooks Beisner (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn) is connecting at a .333 clip with a team-best .520 slugging percentage and five home runs, adding 24 RBI and 20 runs scored. Junior Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) also has a .303 average, bringing in 24 RBI and 22 runs scored.
Ranked No. 19 this week by Collegiate Baseball, the Gators travel to Hammond Stadium with a 19-18 (8-7 SEC) overall record, winning eight of its last 10 contests. Most recently, UF earned a three-game sweep of SEC foe then-No. 8 South Carolina (W 3-2, W 4-3, W 14-5) in Gainesville last weekend and defeated then-No. 7 Florida State, 4-3, on the road in a mid-week meeting last Tuesday.
Sophomore outfielder Justin Shafer leads the Gators with a .319 average, recording 15 RBI and 22 runs scored while holding a team-best .472 slugging percentage. Senior infielder Vickash Ramjit holds a .311 average with 25 runs scored and a team-high 20 RBI.
Prior to the game, fans are encouraged to come celebrate “Dunk City” and meet members of the FGCU men’s basketball team that advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament this past season. Members of the team will be on-hand to sign autographs for fans at 5:30 p.m. before throwing out the first pitch for the contest.
Live stats and live audio for the contest will be available at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com on the day of the game.
