NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After surviving an elimination game on Thursday afternoon against No. 5 Kennesaw State, the No. 3 FGCU softball team (36-17, 16-7 A-Sun) will look extend its stay at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Softball Championship when it takes on No. 1 North Florida (41-14, 18-6 A-Sun) on Friday, May 10 at 4:00 p.m. EST at Draper Diamond.

In a matchup that has previously been dubbed as the “Battle of the Birds,” the two sides were scheduled to play a three-game set in Jacksonville, Fla. (May 3-4), but rain in the surrounding area washed out the trio of contests.

Already the owners of the regular season 2013 A-Sun Championship, the Ospreys find themselves on the brink of elimination after falling to No. 4 Lipscomb, 3-1 in eight innings, and beating No. 6 Stetson, 1-0, on Thursday.

North Florida is in its first A-Sun Championship in the history of the program, while FGCU is making its second appearance and the Eagles have a 4-1 record in the championship after winning the tournament in 2012.

FGCU and UNF have had a total of 16 meetings all-time in the history of the programs and heading into the three-game series, they are tied at 8-8. The two sides last met on May 3, 2012 at the FGCU Softball Complex in a doubleheader that the Eagles swept by winning game one, 3-2, followed by a 2-1 victory in game two on a walk-off solo home run from Kayla Gabel (Lakeland, Fla./State College of Florida) in the bottom of the ninth. The walk-off win lifted the Green and Blue to a share of the 2012 A-Sun Regular season title.

A win for the Green and Blue would put them in a 6:30 p.m. game against the loser between No. 2 USC Upstate and No. 4 Lipscomb.

The game between the Eagles and Owls can be viewed live and free of charge on ASun.TV with tickets still available for purchase ($10 for daily admission and $25 for a tournament pass).
