Zgrabik and Carpenter Named to NFCA All-South Region Team
FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the 2013 regular season having ended, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced its 2013 Division I All-Region teams on Thursday afternoon. Two members of the FGCU softball team (36-18, 16-7 Atlantic Sun) were named to South Region teams, as junior Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) was named to the first team and sophomore Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) was named to the region’s second team.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
“A big congratulations goes to both Chelsea (Zgrabik) and Kelsey (Carpenter) for being honored,” said head coach David Deiros. “Being recognized as some of the best in our region is something they should be proud of. They both worked very hard this season and it is now paying off as the honors and awards continue to pile up for the both of them.”
This marks the second time Zgrabik has received All-Region honors as, during her sophomore season in 2012, she was named to the All-South Region’s second team. Zgrabik finished the 2013 season with 15 home runs (second in A-Sun & 25th in the nation) for 56 RBI (tied for first in A-Sun & sixth in the nation) while posting a .329 batting average, a .713 slugging percentage (third in A-Sun) and a .404 on-base percentage. The high offensive numbers helped Zgrabik capture honors such as A-Sun Co-Player of the Year and A-Sun second team catcher, after playing in 45 games before suffering a season-ending injury against USC Upstate (Apr. 21). The junior backstop recorded three two-home run games, seven three-RBI games, three four-RBI games and one six-RBI game over the course of her 45-game season.
In just her second season as a member of the FGCU squad, Carpenter finished with a team-high in batting average (.379), walks (35) and on-base percentage (.487). The sophomore slugger was named to the A-Sun second team after shining throughout the year for the Eagles in left field, as Carpenter compiled 10 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 32 RBI over the course of her 51 appearances and 49 starts. Her five triples tied for first in the A-Sun and 15th in the nation in the category. The Oviedo, Fla. native ranks third in the A-Sun and 48th in the nation in walks with 36, while placing fourth in the NCAA in sacrifice flies this season with six. Carpenter made the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team after posting a 3.90 GPA while majoring in Physical Therapy.
Five teams saw all six of their nominated players earn all-region accolades: No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 6 Texas and Hofstra (received votes in the final regular season poll). The Ducks placed a nation-best five of their players on the first team in the Pacific Region, while the fourth-rated Sun Devils, No. 5 Tennessee, the sixth-ranked Longhorns, No. 9 Alabama, Fordham and Hofstra followed closely behind with four first-team nods each.
