Cooney Selected by Los Angeles Angels in 6th Round of MLB Draft
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior right-hander Harrison Cooney (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) became the first FGCU player off the board in the 2013 MLB Draft on Friday, as he was selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 187th pick of the sixth round.
Cooney is the 13th player in the program’s 11-year history to be drafted and the third-highest selection behind 2010 Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year Chris Sale who was picked with the 13th overall selection by the Chicago White Sox in 2010 and 2008 sixth round selection (pick #183) Richard Bleier, who was taken by the Texas Rangers. He is the fourth FGCU player to be selected in the top 10 rounds.
It marks the second time Cooney has been drafted, as he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 40th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates coming out of Vero Beach High School.
Used primarily as a reliever over his three seasons at FGCU, Cooney had his best season to date in 2013. The Vero Beach, Fla. native was 6-6 on the year, but 4-1 after becoming a starter over the final month of the season. Cooney established career-highs in appearances (21), games started (5), wins (6), saves (5), innings pitched (66.2) and opponent’s batting average (.229). Possessing a fast ball the touches the mid-90s, Cooney struck out a healthy 59 batters over 66.2 innings of work and limited right-handed batters to a .194 clip (31-160).
Over his five starts that included one that was interrupted after two innings due to rain, Cooney held opposing hitters to a .183 batting average with a team-high four wins over that span. Over the five starts, he went at least six innings three times and held a 3.12 ERA.
Cooney has made 61 appearances at FGCU, sporting a 13-11 record with a 4.39 ERA over 139.1 innings of work. His nine career saves are the second-most in program history while his 13 wins are tied for 10th. Over his 139.1 innings, Cooney has struck out 113 batters.
The Eagles finished the season with a 37-20 record and their 19-8 mark in A-Sun was good for second place in the regular season. Fans can get updates and information on FGCU baseball by visiting by following the team on twitter @FGCU_Baseball.
