FORT MYERS, Fla. – No stranger to being a top 15 round pick in his career, FGCU junior Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) only had to wait three picks on the third day of the 2013 MLB Draft to hear his name called as the Colorado Rockies took the power-hitting outfielder with the 319th pick of the 11th round.

Dwyer was a 15th round selection coming out of Tavares High School in 2011 and his selection on Saturday set a new FGCU program record with four draftees in the same year. All four of the Eagles’ draftees are juniors, while Dwyer is the 16th player in the program’s 11-year history to be drafted.

A left-handed slugger with good plate patience, Dwyer has started 166 of the 169 games he’s played in since coming to FGCU after turning down the chance to turn pro. Over those 169 games, Dwyer supplied a hit in 116 contests with 52 multi-hit performances. A corner outfielder as junior who spent his sophomore season at first base, Dwyer sports a .289 career batting average with, 98 runs scored, 40 doubles, nine triples, 12 home runs, 98 runs scored, 114 RBI, 100 walks and a .385 on-base percentage.

Dwyer bounced back from a tough freshman season with a strong summer as a Northwoods League All-Star (Willmar Stingers) and solid sophomore campaign in 2012 that was capped with a selection to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament team. He started all 57 games primarily at first base, collecting a .297 batting average with a team-high 21 extra-base hits that included 16 doubles, two triples and three home runs. Dwyer’s selection to the A-Sun All-Tournament team was validated by his .474 batting average (9-19) over the four-game push that took the Eagles to the final day, while the four-game hit streak brought his season total to 41 of 57 contests with a hit, highlighted by a team-best 20 of the multiple variety.

With his late season push and a summer in the Cape Cod League (Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox), Dwyer entered his junior season in 2013 as an A-Sun Preseason All-Conference choice by College Sports Madness and didn’t disappoint. Dwyer moved from first base to left field en route to starting all 57 games for the second straight year, while setting career-bests with a .332 batting average, 44 runs scored, 72 hits, five triples, six home runs, 46 RBI, a .512 slugging percentage and a .424 on-base clip. For the second straight year, Dwyer produced 20+ extra-base hits while coming away with a base knock in 46 of the 57 contests, earning a spot on the A-Sun All-Conference first team.

Dwyer’s improvement each year was most evident in crunch time of the month of May where over the last two years he hit .385 (45-117). He came away with a hit in 26 of 30 games in the May of 2012 and 2013, which FGCU produced a 20-10 mark en route to advancing to the final day of the 2012 A-Sun Tournament and finishing second in the 2013 A-Sun regular season standings. Dwyer ended the 2013 on a career-long 14-game hit streak.
