DeSousa One of TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Top Forwards Entering 2013
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s soccer sophomore-to-be and reigning Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year Felipe DeSousa (Vila Velha, Brazil/Wharton HS-FL) was recently recognized by TopDrawerSoccer.com as one of the top forwards in the nation heading into the 2013 campaign.
DeSousa, who was deemed the No. 84 ranked freshman by the soccer outlet following last year, was considered for TopDrawerSoccer.com’s top 10 forwards, but finished just outside that grouping along with 14 other players. He was one 11 sophomores in the list of 24.
A Soccer America All-Freshman second team choice and College Soccer News All-Freshman third team selection, DeSousa was FGCU’s biggest offensive threat in his first season on the pitch, equaling a program single-season record with seven goals while leading the team with 15 points. Highlighting DeSousa’s seven goals over 15 games played, which ranked third in the A-Sun, were a league-leading and program record five game-winners.
The Vila Velha, Brazil native became just the second player in program history to score a goal in three straight games, which all happened to be game-winners against A-Sun foes USC Upstate, North Florida and at Jacksonville. After his two-goal performance at JU, DeSousa was named the A-Sun Player of the Week.
DeSousa also found his way on the NSCAA All-South Region second team, A-Sun All-Conference first team and All-Freshmen team. With his overtime game-winner against Lipscomb in the A-Sun semifinals, he was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament team.
FGCU will welcome back 15 players from last year’s club that finished with an 11-5-3 record, won its third straight A-Sun regular season crown (6-1-1) and advanced to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament via winning the A-Sun Tournament while ushering talented seven-member recruiting class. FGCU is one of just four teams in the nation to win its respective conference postseason tournament the last two years and one of 24 programs to make the NCAA Tournament in the 2011 and 2012.
