FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s golf team will have a new home course starting in 2013-14. The Eagles will call Southwest Florida’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course the Old Corkscrew Golf Club (OCGC) their home, utilizing its first-class facilities to continue their growth into one of the nation’s top programs.

Old Corkscrew opened for play in February of 2007 and has quickly been recognized as one of the nation’s finest golf courses and been included on a number of prestigious lists. Jack Nicklaus’ dedication and ingenuity has enhanced hundreds of spectacular courses worldwide but in Lee County, Southwest Florida, only Old Corkscrew Golf Club is highlighted by that spectacular designation – Jack Nicklaus ‘Signature Design’.

“On behalf of the owners, members and staff of Old Corkscrew Golf Club, we welcome the FGCU men's golf team,” said Majority Owner Phil Anderson. “We take great pride with the opportunity to support FGCU and head coach Brent Jensen's program by providing a Jack Nicklaus signature design championship facility. Our staff will assure the high standards we have set in place are maintained as our contribution to this new venture. We wish the FGCU golf team great success and look forward to a long partnership with a first class athletic program and university.”

“Our partnership with Old Corkscrew is an exciting and welcomed opportunity to continue to grow our program,” said third-year FGCU head coach Brent Jensen, who has guided the team to seven team titles since taking over the program. “The facilities are world class and it will give our team the opportunity to really improve in all aspects of the game. On behalf of our men’s golf program and FGCU athletics, I would like to thank Phil Anderson, Mark Iwinski, Mike Calbot and the rest of the great staff at Old Corkscrew. We will do our best to help continue the great traditions at Old Corkscrew as a players course.”

The par-72 championship layout which opened in 2007 meets the highest design criteria. Since OCGC is not part of any real estate development, this course is a “core” or “stand-alone” extraordinary golf experience. The course design has been developed to mesh precisely with the outstanding natural assets – mature oak, pine and cypress trees and a natural flow way through the center of the property... adding up to one spectacular golf course.

Old Corkscrew Golf Club was ranked No. 1 in Southwest Florida in 2010 and 2012 by Golf Magazine and has been the host of several tournaments since opening in 2007. OCGC has been a qualifying site for the PGA Champions Tour ACE Group Championship (2011-2013), host of the Florida Junior Tour (2011-13), West Florida Tour (2012, 2013), USGA Sectional qualifier (2009, 2010), the 2008 Florida State Amateur Championship and the 2007 Florida State Senior Open.

“We are excited and proud of this affiliation with the FGCU men’s golf program,” said OCGC general manager Mark Iwinski. “The program continues to grow under coach Jensen’s guidance and we are happy that our facility can enhance that rapid rise.”

FGCU has picked up at least one team win in each of the three seasons under Jensen, highlighted by the Fall of 2011 when the Eagles strung together an impressive four straight wins. One of FGCU’s original programs that started in 2000-01, the Green and Blue have been eligible for the NCAA Championships the last two years and have sent an individual into a regional in each of those years of eligibility. Just a few weeks ago, local product Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) tied for ninth overall at the Tallahassee Regional to cap a fine freshman campaign that included A-Sun Freshman of the Year honors. In 2012, then-senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) was the No. 6 individual seed in the Athens Regional.
