FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s tennis team is coming off a year where they showed they are continuing to build upon successes from previous seasons. This year marked an unprecedented number of accomplishments and "firsts" as an FGCU program.

Highlighting the season was the Green and Blue's win over tradition-rich program Oklahoma State! FGCU won the night match 4-3, taking 4 of the 6 singles matches (at positions 1, 2, 3, 4) following a disappointing doubles point loss. Tianyu Bao was the last on the court, as the team score was knotted up at 3-3. Bao played the entire third set as the last remaining match and pulled out the victory in heart-wrenching 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 fashion!

The FGCU Invite was another incredible success for the program - a tournament during the fall campaign - hosting Miami, UCF, FAU, and Barry. FGCU swept the singles and the doubles tournament, protecting "The Nest" with honor. Jordi Vives won the singles championship 6-1, 6-1, over Victor Mauz from Miami, and the tandem Tianyu Bao and Lance Lvovsky won the doubles championship, 8-4, over Vivas/Alfonzo from Barry.

FGCU also made a significant jump in Atlantic Sun play, finishing fourth in the conference and achieving its first ever postseason win against USC Upstate. Sophomore Michael Beiler clinched the match over a player he had lost to previously in the season, winning in a convincing manner 6-2, 6-0. Throughout the season, FGCU had plenty of tight matches against nationally ranked opponents, including Miami, Old Dominion, UAB, and UNF; and FGCU also defeated four teams during the 2013 season who had beaten them during the prior campaign.

A-Sun postseason awards were another area where FGCU was able to make a name for itself and accomplish many program firsts. Sophomore sensations Jordi Vives and Tianyu Bao were both honored as All-Conference selections, Vives being a first team candidate and Bao being a second team selection. Vives tallied more accomplishments by making the A-Sun All-Tournament team and being an Academic All-Conference selection. Vives beat the A-Sun Conference Player of the Year 6-3, 6-1 during his tournament run.

And finally, FGCU continues to build on its community support, breaking attendance records and improving fundraising efforts. This year, FGCU made significant jumps, building upon their relationships with Grandezza, Shadow Wood Country Club and the Bonita Bay Club. These clubs, including all of the surrounding country clubs, have allowed FGCU to host incredible events at the FGCU Tennis Complex, most notably the home match against SMU where FGCU welcomed 992 fans! During the remainder of the season, it is estimated that FGCU had just over 200 fans at any given match, making it among one of the highest attended tennis programs in the country!
