BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – Senior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus High School) took home the individual championship and helped FGCU to finish with a tie for first-place at the 2013 Eagle Invitational, hosted by FGCU at Worthington Country Club on Monday, Sept. 16.

Carlson tied two other players to lead the field with a score of 72 during the first-round of play and carded a 73 during the second round to take sole possession of first place.  Her second round featured two bogeys and a birdie on the front nine for a nine-hole score of 37.  Carlson went on to birdie hole 15 and bogey the last hole of the tournament to finish +1 on the day.  The senior finished with a +1 score of 145, just one stroke ahead of the second-place finisher.

“I am very proud of Briana and the way she played this tournament,” said head coach Sarah Trew.  “She was very consistent through two rounds and I am very excited that she earned the win.”

After finishing the opening round in third place, the Eagles gained seven strokes to overcome The University of West Florida and tie day-one leader Barry University.  FGCU and Barry compiled team scores of 596 through two rounds, with the Eagles carding the best second-round score at 293.  The team’s Monday score was 10 strokes better than Sunday’s round.

“Today we shot 293, which is a pretty good round,” said Trew.  “I am really proud of our girls.  We need to definitely remember that every shot counts and a 300-yard drive is just as important much as a one-foot putt.  Next tournament we need to work on our short game and hitting the greens, but I think this tournament should give us some confidence moving forward.”

Junior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) placed fourth in the two-day event with a total score of 149.  Price birdied two of her first four holes before adding a double-bogey, a bogey and another birdie on the front nine.  She was even at 37 at the turn.  She bogeyed just three holes on the back nine to finish +3 at 75.

Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) and Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) both tied for eighth place with total scores of 153.  Detlefsen carded a 79 in the first round before completing the tournament with a +2 74.  Guoynes posted a team-best score of 72 on the second round, a nine-stroke improvement from her first round score of 81.  Guoynes birdied her second hole before carding bogeys in three later holes.  The junior birdied two of her final four holes to even her score and finish among the top 10.

Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) posted the Eagles’ only eagle of the tournament when she completed the 481-yaard eighth hole in just three strokes.  Yong finished with a final score of 159.

Individually, the Eagles saw strong play from three underclassmen.

Sophomore Emma Smyser (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast High School) carded a 153 after recording a score of 75 in the second round.  Smyser’s score also put her among the players tied for eighth place.

Rebecca Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) finished in 16th place with a final mark of 157, while Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) finished at 163.

The Eagles will return to action Oct. 5-7 at the Xavier LPGA Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla.
