DeSousa Named #ASunMSoc Player of the Week After Game-Winning Goal, Assist
MACON, Ga. – Following a weekend in which he scored the game-winning goal on Friday against the University of Pennsylvania and issued the game-winning assist Sunday at Princeton, sophomore Felipe DeSousa has been named the Atlantic Sun Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to a pair of wins to close the non-conference schedule.
DeSousa (Tampa, Fla./Wharton HS) tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the campaign and sixth game-winning strike of his young career at the 99:03 mark after Santiago Echeverri (Kissimmee, Fla./Celebration HS) issued a pass at the top of the box to the Brazil native, who deked a couple of defenders to create some room and finished his shot low and inside the left post.
The forward’s strike tied him atop the program’s all-time game-winning goals chart with 2011 graduate Christian Raudales. Now with 12 career goals, the sophomore is already tied for second in that category with 2011 grad Scott Harrison, and his 26 points are sixth all-time.
His 26th point came just more than three minutes into overtime Sunday against Princeton. DeSousa flipped a ball over the heads of several Princeton defenders and onto the foot of Will Suedois (Miami Shores, Fla./Florida Virtual School), who gave the Eagles a 1-0 overtime win to complete a perfect 2-0 Northeast roadtrip.
The communications major now currently sits in second place in the A-Sun for points with 11. The Player of the Week honor is the second of his career and first this year by an FGCU performer. DeSousa earned his first recognition on Oct. 22 last year after scoring two goals against Jacksonville.
The meetings with Penn and Princeton were the first all-time and capped a long, lengthy 8,780-mile roadtrip over the past two weekends which took the Eagles from SWFL to the Northwest, back to Fort Myers and then to the Northeast.
The game with the Tigers on ESPNU marked the second consecutive weekend that the Eagles were on national TV. Last week opposite now-No. 5 Washington they were showcased on the Pac-12 Network, and their season opener at USF was shown as the NSCAATV National Game of the Week.
The victories over Penn and Princeton also concluded an overall dominant weekend by the FGCU’s men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball teams as the trio collectively went a perfect 6-0.
FGCU now begins its Atlantic Sun Conference Championship title defense as the Eagles commence league play at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Green and Blue begin the weekend with a 7 p.m. kickoff against Lipscomb on Friday before entertaining Northern Kentucky in its lone afternoon home match of the season on Sunday at 1.
