@FGCU_VB Looks to Extend Win Streak at Stetson Friday

DeLand, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s volleyball team will aim to extend its current win streak to five games as the Eagles travel to Stetson University on Friday, Oct. 4. The match at the Edmunds Center is slated for 6 p.m.
The Green and Blue enter the weekend with a record of 5-10 after easily defeating Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday in Daytona Beach.
Junior Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) has moved up the leaderboard and currently tops the Eagle offense with 3.43 kills per set. Barnes ranks sixth among Atlantic Sun hitters with 151 kills on the season. Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers High School) and Christine Pinder (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz High School) have also supported the Eagle offense with 2.86 and 2.85 kills per set, respectively. Junior Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) currently ranks fifth in the conference with an average of 10.16 assists per set, while A-Sun Preseason Libero of the Year Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani High School) has a team-high 192 digs on the season.
LAST TIME OUT
In its first away contest in three weeks, the team earned a 3-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Eagles defeated the Wildcats in three sets with an impressive .366 attack percentage, while holding Bethune-Cookman to a season-low for opponents with a .084 average.
Barnes led the Eagle offense in Daytona Beach with 15 kills on the night, while Pinder added 11 kills and recorded an attack percentage of .389. Meyer improved the offensive effort with 29 assists through three sets.
Defensively, the Eagles saw 13 digs from Masters, while Karina Mambuca (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast High School) led all players with four blocks.
The Hatters of Stetson University currently hold first-place among the Atlantic Sun’s 10 teams. The Hatters maintain a record of 13-6 on the season with an undefeated 4-0 mark in league play and are off to the best start in program history. Prior to falling to FAU in three sets on Tuesday, the Hatters had won seven-straight contests for a program record win-streak. The team’s strong win-loss record includes a 9-0 record on its home court.
Senior Kaley Melville ranks fifth among A-Sun compeitors and leads the Hatters’ attack with 3.54 kills per set and an attack percentage of .241. Rookie Tiffany Creamer adds to the offense with 2.76 kills per set, while sophomore Kayla Weller has facilitated the duo with 10 assists per stanza. Sophomore Michelle Kastner has paced the Hatter defense with 3.80 digs per set, with Ellen Hawks leading the charge on blocking with 0.97 blocks per set.
As a unit, the Hatters have maintained a .213 attack percentage through 19 games, while holding opponents to .165.
The Eagles hold the advantage in the all-time series against the Hatters with nine wins and just one loss since 2007. FGCU has defeated Stetson four times while on the road in DeLand, Fla. and currently holds a three-game overall win streak against the A-Sun foe. The lone blemish in the all-time record is a 3-2 loss at Stetson in 2011.
ON THE HORIZON
Following the in-state matchup, the Eagles will host FAU at Alico Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. The Green and Blue will continue Atlantic Sun play next weekend when they travel to USC Upstate and ETSU for matches on Friday and Saturday. Both games are set for 7 p.m. A three-game roadtrip will conclude with the final nonconference tilt of the season when the Eagles will face FIU in Miami on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.

Season tickets are $35 for adults and $17 for youth (ages 3-12). Single-game tickets can also be purchased for $6 per adult and $3 for youth.
