Suchy Selected By Pirates in Fifth Round of the 2014 MLB Draft

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Junior outfielder Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) became the first FGCU baseball player off the board in the 2014 MLB Draft on Friday, as he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round with the 161st pick.

Suchy is the 20th player in the program’s 12-year history to be drafted and the second-highest selection in program history behind 2010 Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year Chris Sale who was picked with the 13th overall selection by the Chicago White Sox in 2010. He is the seventh FGCU player to be selected in the top 10 rounds.

The Bradenton, Fla. native put together his most productive season in an FGCU uniform while maintaining a 3.59 GPA in the field of Elementary Education. The junior posted a .318 batting average in 2014 to go with 76 hits, 54 runs, 16 doubles, four triples, eight homeruns and a career-best and team-high 49 RBI to help guide the Eagles to a fourth A-Sun Regular Season Championship. His efforts earned him spots on the Atlantic Sun All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team

Suchy was an important piece to the FGCU lineup all season long, appearing in all but one game as the right-fielder or DH. He vastly improved his numbers from last season that earned him a spot on the A-Sun All-Conference Second Team. Suchy had an improved batting average this season and more runs, doubles, triples and RBI than in 2013. He also showed elite speed with 10 stolen bases to his credit.

For his career Suchy hit .291 over 162 games with a slugging percentage of .440 on the strength of 171 hits while producing 27 doubles, five triples, 17 homeruns and 101 RBI. He also walked 58 times, built an on-base percentage of .366 and stole 22 of 32 bases while maintaining a .981 fielding percentage with 12 assists and 341 put-outs.

The Eagles finished the season with a 39-22 record and their 19-8 mark in the A-Sun earned the program a fourth A-Sun Regular Season Championship. Fans can get updates and information on FGCU baseball by visiting Facebook.com/FGCUBaseball or by following the team on twitter @FGCU_Baseball.
