FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh announced on Monday that Shelana Poindexter has been named the Director of Compliance. Poindexter takes over the compliance roll from Jessica Rouse who now serves as FGCU’s Athletic Academic Coordinator.
“We are delighted to have Shelana joining our FGCU Athletics staff,” said Kavanagh. “In addition to her very congenial personality, she brings to our department a strong combination of experience in compliance, as well as a feel for intercollegiate athletics as a former student-athlete and with her athletics administrative background. I also want to relay our tremendous appreciation for the dual role that Jessica Rouse has assumed over the past five months in overseeing our compliance and athletic academic areas. We look forward to her now becoming our first ever full-time academic coordinator and in spearheading our continued resolve to generate classroom successes that demonstrate “value added” to the University in equal fashion to our numerous athletic accomplishments.”
As FGCU’s Director of Compliance, Poindexter will serve as the liaison between FGCU and the NCAA and the Atlantic Sun Conference offices for NCAA rules interpretations and other matters. She will also be responsible for developing and coordinating educational components for staff, student-athletes, booster organizations, and entities outside the athletics department on NCAA and A-Sun rules and regulations.
“I’m extremely excited for the opportunity to work for a growing Division 1 athletic department like FGCU,” said Poindexter. “I’m looking forward to being a part of the department as it builds upon its already tremendous success.”
Poindexter served the past two seasons as the Associate A.D. for Compliance and Student-Athlete Welfare at Georgian Court University, while also having the role as Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). At Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J., her primary responsibilities included tracking the eligibility and progress of student-athletes to ensure compliance with the NCAA and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), implemented rules education programs for coaches and other staff members, documented and self-reported rule violations to the NCAA and CACC, and managed community engagement programs.
From 2006-08, Poindexter was the Assistant A.D. for Compliance and the SWA at her alma mater Abilene Christian University (TX). There she maintained all records of eligibility, academics and financial aid for roughly 430 student-athletes. Among her other primary responsibilities at Abilene Christian, Poindexter served as the liaison between athletics and the financial aid office, admissions and registar; completed all annual and semi-annual compliance reports and initiated the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program.
Poindexter began her work in intercollegiate athletics with the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) from 2005-06. While working for NACWAA, Poindexter updated and maintained data within membership databases, while coordinating events at the 2005 NACWAA National Convention, along with multiple other responsibilities.
Poindexter graduated from Abilene Christian University where she was a four-year track and field letterwinner, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2004. She followed that with a master’s degree in organizational and human resource development from ACU in December of 2007.
