FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the academic semester coming to an end, the FGCU Sports Report produced by WGCU-TV will also take a short break after this weekend when its fall season finale airs five times, beginning on Saturday morning.
The first showing will go off at 6:30 a.m. on ABC7 on Saturday morning and will air again in primetime at 6:30 p.m. on WGCU.
The FGCU Sports Report, a 30-minute show which showcases all 14 Division I sports at FGCU, will keep the Southwest Florida community apprised of the FGCU Eagles’ action on a weekly basis through mid-May. As a community partnership agreement, Waterman Broadcasting also will be airing the show on ABC7 and NBC’s News Now channel.
FGCU men’s basketball head coach Dave Balza sat down with host Tom James as this week’s exclusive interview. Balza’s five-minute interview leads into a special feature about the team’s “Three B’s” in senior Reed Baker (Naples, Fla./Bishop Verot HS/Michigan), sophomore Anthony Banks (Lantana, Fla./Santaluces HS) and sophomore Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS). Baker and Banks are currently the Atlantic Sun’s second-best scoring duo at a combined 33.1 points per game.
Also featured on the show is a recap of the Dinner on the Diamond event that was held last Sunday evening in Alico Arena. The event included celebrity appearances from several PGA Tour and MLB professions, including former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger and FGCU professionals Casey Coleman (MLB/Chicago Cubs), Derek Lamely (PGA) and Chris Sale (MLB Chicago White Sox).
This week’s player profiles will focus on women’s basketball junior Courtney Chihil (Tipp City, Ohio/Alter HS) and men’s tennis junior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Chihil is currently averaging 7.8 points and 4.5 rebounds with a team-best 18 steals for FGCU who stands at a perfect 6-0 on the season with wins over ACC foe Virginia Tech and BIG EAST member Seton Hall. Rock concluded his fall season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over USF’s Sebastian Hagan at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championship.
