FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the spring athletic season quickly approaching, the FGCU Sports Report produced by WGCU-TV returns for the fourth episode of the spring on Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
The first showing on Friday will go off at 8:30 p.m. on WGCU (Ch.3) followed by a 6:30 a.m. showing on ABC7 Saturday morning. A complete list of each week’s show is below.
The FGCU Sports Report, a 30-minute show which showcases all 14 Division I sports at FGCU, will keep the Southwest Florida community apprised of the FGCU Eagles’ action on a weekly basis through mid-May. As a community partnership agreement, Waterman Broadcasting also will be airing the show on ABC7 and NBC’s News Now channel.
This week’s show will tip-off with a feature into the inside world of FGCU athletic trainers. The athletic training staff, led by Assistant Athletic Director Mike Estes, MS, ATC, LAT, has seven fully-certified trainers that assist in every facet of comprehensive healthcare for the Eagles’ 14 sport programs.
FGCU and current Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale sat down with Tom James, who also serves as the Voice of FGCU Basketball, as the feature interview. In the five-minute interview, Sale discusses his quick ascent to the major leagues. After becoming FGCU’s first-ever first round choice in the 2010 MLB Draft, it took Sale all of 33 days to make the big move to Chicago. As the season grew to a close, Sale became manager Ozzie Guillen’s go-to lefty reliever due to his ability to record strikeouts. Sale struck out 32 batters in just 23.1 innings of work as a member of the White Sox.
The second part of the episode features the FGCU Cheerleaders. For the first time in FGCU Cheerleading history, the team has several male team members who have been able to increase the squad’s stunting ability. Besides cheering on the sidelines of men’s and women’s home basketball games, the cheerleaders travel to select away games and other home FGCU sporting events, as well as work in the community.
This week’s player profiles will focus on women’s tennis player Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College), who is the only senior on the squad that was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Sun. Baseball senior Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Central HS) will be the other student-athlete profile. Roberson helped the Eagles claim all 10 A-Sun Conference series in 2010 and secure their third consecutive A-Sun regular season title.
