Le Moyne Rallies For 10-6 Win Over FGCU
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Seven unanswered runs over the seventh and ninth innings led Le Moyne to a 10-6 comeback win over the FGCU baseball team on Friday night during the start of a three-game weekend series at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles owned a 6-3 lead through six innings, but were undone by four runs from the Dolphins (13-23) in the seventh and three more in the ninth that handed the Blue and Green their third loss of the week. FGCU, who fell to No. 8 Florida State to start the week, now stands at 19-20 on the season.
A bright spot in the game was the FGCU bats, as they supplied double figure hits for the seventh time in the last 12 games. Senior Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Central) led the 12-hit attack for the Eagles by going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Three other players had multi-hit nights while the first eight batters in the FGCU lineup had at least one base knock.
Unfortunately, for the Eagles, Le Moyne was just as hot at the plate with 14 hits. Seven of those hits came off FGCU starter Austin Gaines (Dunedin, Fla./Northeast HS/South Florida CC) who left with the lead after 6.2 innings of work. Gaines, who made the second start of his career, gave up five runs and struck out three in a no-decision.
Senior Jack Wagoner (Berlin, Conn./Northwest Catholic/St. Petersburg) replaced Gaines with two outs in the seventh and gave up two straight hits and was charged with giving up the eventual game-winning run in the loss. Junior Jason Forjet (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Nova HS) got the final out of the seventh and stopped the bleeding with a scoreless eighth before the Dolphins got three more insurance runs off junior Jacob Barnes (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg HS) in the ninth.
FGCU took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat when Roberson drove in his program-leading 168th run on a double to right center field. Gaines held the Dolphins at bay until they tied the game at 1-1 in top of the fourth. The Eagles bounced right back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to take back the lead at 4-1. Freshman Jake Foley (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) doubled home sophomore Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) who led off the inning with his sixth double of the month of April. The final two runs of the inning came from another freshman, as Sean Dwyer (Leesburg, Fla./Tavares HS) drilled a two-run double to cap the frame.
After two more Le Moyne runs in the top of the sixth made it a 4-3 game, FGCU, again, responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on another double from Roberson that bumped the lead back to three, at 6-3, before the Le Moyne rally.
Reeves’ double was part of a 2-for-4 night at the plate that saw him stretch his hit streak to eight games. Foley and senior Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Central HS) had the other multi-hit games for the Eagles.
Le Moyne starter Jeff Tardiff went 5.2 innings and was one out away from earning the win. Erik Lambe (1-0) was credited for the win after getting the final out of the sixth before the Dolphins took the lead in the top of the seventh. Lambe started a string of three straight scoreless innings to close the game for the Le Moyne bullpen.
The second game of the weekend series will begin on Saturday at 2 p.m. Live Stats are available at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com.
