FORT MYERS, Fla. – With just two non-conference mid-week games left on its regular season slate, the FGCU baseball team will head to the other side of South Florida to take on red hot FIU on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.

The Eagles enter the game with a 22-22 overall record, while FIU is currently riding an eight-game win streak that has improved its mark to 28-16. The Panthers occupy second place in the Sun Belt standings at 13-8.

FGCU holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series against the Panthers, winning the most recent meeting in Miami last year by a 10-7 margin. In that game, Mikel Alvarez drove in three runs, while current Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale picked up the save.

Senior Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla./North Port HS/Pasco-Hernando CC) needs just one hit to reach his third double figure streak of the season. Maxfield leads the Eagles in nearly every offensive category with a .391 batting average, 40 runs scored, 70 hits, 18 doubles, nine home runs and 50 RBI. Senior Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Central HS) recently reached the 300-hit plateau for his career and is just nine hits shy of the FGCU record.

FIU owns three road wins over nationally-ranked teams and is 18-6 at home this season. Junior outfielder Pablo Bermudez is batting a team-best .384 with 15 stolen bases. Junior shortstop Garrett Wittels, who produced a 56-game hit streak in 2010 the second longest streak in NCAA history, sports a .342 average with a team-high 63 hits.
