FORT MYERS, Fla. – Currently occupying the sixth and final A-Sun Tournament spot, the FGCU baseball team will look to move up the standings this weekend when it hosts No. 15 Stetson for a three-game set starting on Friday.
The Eagles sit just ahead of Mercer and UNF for the sixth spot, while positions 3-8 in the standings are separated by just two games. FGCU comes into the weekend with an 11-10 A-Sun mark, while Stetson occupies the top spot in the A-Sun at 17-4.
FGCU has taken the previous three series between the two schools, each by a 2-1 margin. The only meeting at Swanson Stadium came in 2009.
As a team, FGCU is batting .292, significantly raising its mark during the month of April when it came on to hit .336. The Eagles have finished with double figures in 21 contests, going 17-4 during those performances.
Currently on his third double figure hit streak of the season (10), senior Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla./North Port HS/Pasco-Hernando CC) boasts team-highs of a .392 batting average, 41 runs scored, 71 hits, 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 51 RBI. Four other Eagles have batting averages over .300, including junior Javi Sujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Sunset HS/Middle Georgia College) who enters on an eight-game hit streak and is hitting .433 against A-Sun foes.
The Hatters sport a No. 14 ranking in the top RPI according to WarrenNolan.com, picking up three A-Sun series sweeps, a sweep of Georgia and a road win at then-No. 4 Florida State. Stetson hits just over .300 as a team, led by junior catcher Nick Rickles who bats a team-best .371 average with 17 doubles, seven home runs and 45 RBI.
