FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the final contest in the three-game Atlantic Sun weekend series, the FGCU baseball team fell to No. 14 Stetson, 13-2, on Sunday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
The win completes the sweep for the Hatters, marking the first time the Eagles have ever been swept since joining the A-Sun in 2008, a span of 38 series. FGCU is now 22-26 on the season and 11-13 in the A-Sun, while Stetson improves to 37-10 on the season and reaches the 20-win plateau in league play at 20-4.
After an RBI single by sophomore Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) gave the Eagles a 1-0 in the first inning, the Hatters took complete control of the game by sending eight runs across the plate in the second on seven hits to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
Neither starting pitcher made it through the fourth inning, but the Hatters were able to tack onto their lead thanks to another terrific outing from their bullpen. Tucker Donahue got the win out of the pen after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings, highlighting a trio of pitchers that combined to give up no runs and five hits over the final 6.1 innings.
Starter Jason Forjet (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Nova HS) got the loss on the mound after running into trouble in the second. Five different pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts on the day, but gave up 13 hits and issued seven walks.
Senior Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla./North Port HS/Pasco-Hernando CC) produced a hit for the 23rd time in his last 25 games, going 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI for his team-leading 21st multi-hit game of the season. Reeves’ single in the first was one of two hits on the day. Senior Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) scored both of FGCU’s runs and had three stolen bases.
FGCU returns to the field for its final non-conference game of the season against FAU on Tuesday, May 10 beginning at 6:30 p.m. from Swanson Stadium. The Owls bring a 27-19 (14-10 Sun Belt) record into the contest with the Blue and Green.
