Monthly show kicks-off Saturday at 4 p.m. on WGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After a successful opening year in 2010-11, the FGCU Sports Report, produced by WGCU-TV, returns for a second season on Saturday afternoon with its first episode premiering at 4 p.m. on WGCU (Ch. 3/Ch. 440).

The FGCU Sports Report, a 30-minute show which showcases all 14 Division I sports at FGCU, will keep the Southwest Florida community apprised of the FGCU Eagles’ action on a monthly basis. As a community partnership agreement, Waterman Broadcasting also will be airing the show on ABC7 and NBC’s News Now channel.

Veteran sports journalist Tom James — a two-time Edward R. Murrow Award winner for sports reporting — will host the show from the WGCU studios for the second straight year. James was sports director/anchor at WBBH NBC-2 from 1999 to 2004. During that time, he anchored a live broadcast from Alico Arena on the night of the inaugural FGCU men’s and women’s basketball games and will return this basketball season as the “Voice of the Eagles.”

With all of FGCU’s 14 sports officially eligible for Division I postseason play, the FGCU Sports Report caught up with several of the athletic department’s coaches and student-athletes to get their take on the excitement of being the first Eagles to have a chance at the Atlantic Sun and NCAA Tournaments.

One of two in-studio interviews with James, Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh also talked about FGCU’s recent postseason approval. Additionally, Kavanagh discussed the upcoming basketball season and the excitement surrounding new men’s basketball head coach Andy Enfield and women’s head coach Karl Smesko’s program coming off a 28-win campaign and fourth straight WNIT berth.

Fourth-year women’s volleyball head coach Dave Nichols is the other in-studio interview. Nichols discussed the Green and Blue’s hot start to A-Sun play, as the Eagles have won 10 of their last 12 entering this weekend’s crucial trip to Nashville, Tenn. Freshman Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholtz HS) and sophomore Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) are featured as this month’s player profiles. Meyer leads the team and ranks fourth in the A-Sun with 634 assists, while Holm’s 185 kills are second on the club.

Just a week away from the A-Sun Championship, the FGCU men’s and women’s cross country programs are also featured in this month’s episode. One of the department’s rising sports, FGCU’s cross country teams are led by fourth-year Cassandra Harbin, who has led each program to a trio of top 5 finishes.

Along with Saturday’s premiere, the show will also be shown on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on ABC 7. Every episode can also been seen on www.FGCUATHLETICS.com.
