FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Athletics has named senior men's soccer goalkeeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) and senior women’s soccer forward Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) as the first recipients of the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month award. Glick and Petracco are the Student-Athletes of the Month for October.

Each month, the FGCU Sports Information Department and Athletic Academic staff will choose an Eagle as the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month. Factors in the selection for this honor will be a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.

One of 10 national finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, Glick was named the frontrunner repeat his 2010 A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year and All-Conference first team selection in the 2011 preseason coaches balloting. With a 3.43 GPA as a dual major in business management and marketing, the senior captain has played 1123:19 minutes in net this season for the Eagles, totaling 44 saves while allowing 14 goals. His 1.12 goals against average currently ranks fourth in the A-Sun, while the .759 save percentage is also good for fourth in the league. Glick picked up his 32nd career victory in the 1-0 shutout over USC Upstate last Friday and with three shutouts this season, the Leola, Pa. native sits third in A-Sun history with 19, just four away from the record set by Jeff Cassar of FIU (1992-95).

“The student-athletes who least expect recognition often are the most deserving,” said men’s soccer head coach Bob Butehorn. “They're the ones who make the essential sacrifices to excel in the classroom and on the field, the ones who give up their free time to volunteer in their communities, the ones their teammates look to for leadership and the ones who stay positive in the face of adversity – whether it’s on the playing field or in life. Such is a fitting description for Adam Glick. Adam's commitment to academics is the basis for his goals in life. He strongly believes that more opportunities will present themselves as a result of his hard work in the classroom.”

Petracco earned a spot on the A-Sun’s inaugural Academic All-Conference list. She was a unanimous choice and was chosen as the Scholar Athlete of the Year after earning a 4.0 GPA in public relations, voted on by the conference’s Sports Information Directors. Petracco also earned first team All-Conference honors after leading the team with seven goals and ranking second in points with 17 during the regular season. She finished the conference season with six goals and a team-high 15 points, including two multi-goal games against UNF and USC Upstate.

Petracco, who is on track to become FGCU’s first 4.0 student-athlete, will graduate in the Summer of 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations.

“Gina has been outstanding on and off the field,” said women’s soccer head coach Jim Blankenship. ”She has set the bar when it comes to academic and athletic standards. To carry a 4.0 GPA and be named first team All-Conference is a powerful statement and one that Gina has taken seriously. She is the perfect example of the word Student-Athlete.”
