ORLANDO, Fla. –The FGCU men’s tennis team earned three singles victories at the UCF Invitational on Friday in Orlando, Fla. at the UCF Tennis Complex. The competition continues tomorrow with doubles and singles play.
“Today was a good first showing for the guys,” said first-year head coach C.J. Weber. “Bao played an awesome singles match and a couple others really displayed their toughness. We have to turn it around in doubles soon, we had some chances but we haven’t capitalized yet.”
Freshman Tianyu Bao (Bradenton, Fla./Bayshore HS) improved to 3-2 in the fall after a straight sets victory over Arkansas’s Mike Nott, 6-4, 6-1.
“It feels great to beat a player from an SEC school,” said Bao. “He had a great serve and volley game but I managed to make my return of serve better at those big points.”
Sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) won a tight match in the third-set defeating Matt Walters from Arkansas, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Tsamas was able to win the final two sets after losing the first-set, 6-2.
Senior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville) earned his fourth victory of the fall after taking down UCF’s Eugene Dolgovykh, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. Rock earned the victory by winning the final two sets, 7-5, 6-3.
